Girls at five years of age were supposed to be playing with dolls and spending summer days splashing around at the pool with doting parents.
The Wolfe twins were forced to stay home, struggling to keep their Shifting under control. Their flashes of anger brought fur to their skin and caused their jaws to elongate and tails to grow, transforming them to wolves.
But not quite.
Their figure stayed completely human. But their ears were long and straight and thick fur lined their wolf-like faces. Blunt claws distorted their hands as they screamed in a voice that was not quite theirs.
To the casual eye, they were nothing less than monstrous.
The werewolf mother insisted she could not understand. The human father hid his fear beneath a mask of confusion.
What they both knew, and never explained, was that the root of their children’s pain could lie only within their mixed blood.
When they were young, emotions could trigger the transformation at any time. Public school was out of the question, so they were educated at home.
A strict routine was established and precautions were taken. During the day, they were educated in maths and standard school subjects. At night, they underwent a series of harsh training exercises, not only on methods of physical defense, but also on suppressing their emotions and disciplining their minds.
It was alright, until a murder shattered what could have been a brighter future.
They were orphaned at the age of eight.
The twins, along with an adopted werewolf sister, were sent to live with a distant grandmother. The old woman cared for them for five years, before suddenly disappearing off the face of the earth.
Oddly enough, no government official ever came to usher them to a new foster home after that.
Without parents, they were forced to enroll themselves in a public school. They had to learn how to blend in and how to turn away curious questions. While most students fussed about friends and dating and petty, everyday things, all the twins wished for was a normal life.
Except... if only that was the greatest of their worries.
